Dr. Franklin Alongi - Postdoctoral Scientist (alongif[at]wfu[dot]edu ; LinkedIn)

I am broadly interested in the physiological mechanisms that allow plants to occupy distinct niche spaces and respond to shifting climatic conditions. My research background spans high-elevation conifer ecophysiology in the Rocky Mountains and hydraulic and metabolic regulation during drought stress and recovery in European Alpine tree species. I am passionate about student mentorship and science accessibility, and my long-term goal is to establish an independent research program integrating state-of-the-art approaches to understand and manage plant community responses under future climates.

I am motivated to understand how abiotic and biotic interactions shape the evolution of plant functional traits. My research investigates how physiological, biochemical, and microbial processes jointly influence plant survival across heterogeneous landscapes. My long-term goal is to lead an interdisciplinary research program at the intersection of evolution, ecophysiology, and conservation by combining rigorous scientific research with mission-driven community engagement to inform stewardship, restoration, and community resilience in our rapidly changing world.

I am broadly interested in how plants interact with their environments and persist through environmental change. Specifically, my research addresses how physiological processes, ecological context, and environmental variation shape plant survival, and I have a strong interest in leveraging research to inform stewardship and restoration practices. My long-term goal is to lead community-focused environmental education programs that combine science with public engagement and place-based learning.
